Making Green Great for You and Your Pet

Making Green Great for You and Your Pet

Tips for a fun and safe St. Patrick’s Day celebration

Your dog doesn’t have to be an Irish Setter to deserve a fun and greenishly great St. Patrick’s Day celebration!

As a day of fun and merriment that Americans of all descents look forward to celebrating each year, St. Patrick’s Day usually involves the consumption of alcohol, and it’s more important than ever to consider the safety of your pooch.  Most importantly, do not allow your pet to drink alcohol.  Consumption can be toxic or at the least, make your pet very sick and disoriented, even in small doses.  You do not want to end your night making an emergency trip to the veterinarian.

If you want to take your pet to a St. Patrick’s Day party or some kind of festive parade, please keep in mind that large crowds and loud noises can be frightening to your pet.  If you do attend a celebratory event, keep your pet on a leash at all times and give your pet a safe distance from tight, crowded spaces.  The safest recommendation is to keep your pet in the safety and comfort of their own home.

Some pet owners like to dye their dogs green for the occasion.  But many dyes, even ones labeled as “nontoxic,” can harm or irritate your dog’s skin.  Instead of dying their hair or fur, consider showing their “shamrock spirit” with a festive bandana, collar, or even a loosely fitting costume for the occasion.

Irish or not, and however you choose to celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day, please remember your pooch is a priority!  Be safe, have fun, and Erin Go Braugh! (“Ireland Forever”)
